Spotted heart orchid (Dactylorhiza hatagirea), commonly called Salam panja, Hatta haddi, or marsh orchid is a potent herb in Ayurveda. This ayurvedic herb grows in the alpine climate of Central and Western Himalayas where the temperatures are very harsh- generally below the freezing point. It is also called as ‘Panchaule’ (meaning 5 fingered hand) as it arises from its root resembling fingers of the hand. The fascinating health benefits of Salam panja have made it one of the important herbs in Ayurveda.
